Neverwinter Nights
Neverwinter Nights is based on the 3rd edition of the wildly popular role playing game called Dungeons and Dragons. Neverwinter Nights was released for play on the Windows operating system in 2002. The original Neverwinter Nights game was a popular Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) that ran on the AOL network from 1991 to 1997. The game was the first MMORPG to feature a detailed graphic environment. Previous MMPORG’s were text based affairs.
Neverwinter Nights can be played under a single player or a multiplayer environment. It all depends on the choices the person who wants to play the game makes when installing the game. The game starts off with a character who is bound by design to be the hero at the end of the game. This process is to be achieved by successfully carrying out various campaigns. Each player must succeed in doing the following – defeat a powerful cult; get the four reagents required to stop a plague; stop and an attack on the city of Neverwinter, and a host of other activities that are seemingly unrelated to the main activity. The main parts of the campaign take place in the city of Neverwinter. During the course of the campaign however , you will be required to venture to other neighboring cities to execute various tasks in these places.
In order to start the game you have to create a character. This is in tune with the tradition set in place by the Dungeons and Dragons game. You can choose various aspects about the character you decide to create. These aspects include the race of the character , the gender, class, alignment, stats, abilities such as skills, spells and feats. The appearance in terms of clothing and the name of the character can be chosen as well.
The original Neverwinter Nights game has about four chapters though a minor prelude starts off the game first. Each chapter has a general storyline and concept that should guide your character for the rest of that chapter. Despite the advancements of this game over the contemporary Dungeons and Dragons 3rd edition role playing game, certain elements of the same game are still adhered to. This holds true especially for attacks, the roll of a die is still required in order to determine the efficacy of the attack and the nature of weapon used for the attack.
The multiplayer environment of Neverwinter Nights is intrinsically complex and can support a large number of players. Up to 72 players may be supported in the same game module. What obtains in these environments is so different from games like Dungeons and Dragons as these components are much more advanced. You can play the game with a team of friends and they can assist you in completing various tasks throughout the duration of the campaign. Each multiplayer edition may be played on a server and a certain module and a very important feature of Neverwinter Nights is the DM client. The DM (Dungeon Master) client is a module that allows one person to act as the Dungeon Master and control the operations of the server. This person may also set the course of the story and monitor other aspects of game play.
