Entering the World of RuneQuest
RuneQuest is the second most popular role playing game after the Dungeons and Dragons game. While Dungeons and Dragons was created by Blizzard Entertainment in the 1970’s, RuneQuest was created in the 70’s as well , precisely in 1978 by Avalon Hill and Chaosium both companies responsible for the creation of various role playing game editions. The game has undergone different alterations due to the nature of different business agreements forged in consort with the original makers of this widely popular role playing game.
To play the game players have to create an individual character each. To create a player character you have to roll the dice much like in games like Dungeons and Dragons. Players may alternate between human or non–human characters but the non–human characters find it difficult to receive a proper reception in human areas . Once the character has been defined other characteristics such as physical characteristics can be selected. These physical characteristics include the gender of the character, the motives and the equipment with which the player wants to launch their campaign. A single player is in charge of monitoring the progress of the game and making sure players abide by the rules – this player is known as the Narrator. The concept of the Narrator derives from the Dungeons and Dragons concept where a character known as the Dungeon Master is responsible for this same functions.
In each rulebook of the game various monsters exist , some of these monsters are Elves, Dwarves, Trolls, Undead and Lycanthropes. The list is not exhaustive as other sorts of monsters exist in the game and can guide various occurrences during game play. Other types of monsters which are popular in RuneQuest include the Broo. To attack a monster in the game you have to roll a percentile dice. A percentile dice determines the success of the attack based on the percentage of success rolled. When your skill level is of a higher or equal to the amount rolled the attack is deemed successful.
Another important part of the RuneQuest game is the Cult. Each player and their character have to choose a Cult to belong to during the duration of the game. This Cult can be determined by the player and it is not a process controlled by rolling any required dice. Entry to any Cult however requires admittance as a Lay Member and this is often achieved by passing an entrance test that is bound to be quite simple. From training in the Lay Member position and depending on the skills you accumulate you can move to a higher state know and the Initiate Member category. The highest cadres in RuneQuest cults are the Rune Lords and the Rune Priests. Rune Lords are of a warrior like cast and they are generally leaders of the Rune Cult. Rune Priests are the mages of the Cult and both Rune Priests and Rune Lords have access to various spells. Available Cults may be good or evil depending on the choice of the players who choose to play the game.
